The Grassroots Harm Reduction Network is a national nonprofit started in the Fall of 2023 by twelve former DanceSafe chapters who left the organization after the executive staff centralized services, stripping autonomy away from local chapters. No longer allowed to raise our own money, recruit and supervise our own volunteers, or speak freely at events about drugs and drug checking (they wanted us to read scripts), we felt we could no longer provide the authentic, quality services we once offered. After the board of directors refused our written request to return to an autonomous chapter model, we started this new umbrella organization to support ourselves and other peer-based, grassroots harm reduction efforts. . . .
